12:00 pm - 1:00 pm ET (New York)

Online

How is Cosmopolitan Zen different then Rinzai or Soto? What are the guiding principles which orient our Zen practice at Shining Bright Lotus Meditation Society? This one-hour introduction offers an overview to the principles and practices of Cosmopolitan Zen.

I initially found sitting meditation very difficult. It wasn’t until I experimented with movement-based practices—followed by sitting—that stillness became more accessible.
— Nanda

In this class, we will explore the principles that inform Cosmopolitan Zen. Discussion will include:

  • How do we honor our Rinzai lineage?

  • How do we make sense of Shakymuni Buddha’s teachings in the current age?

  • What is Mondo Zen and how do we honor the teachings of Jun Po Roshi

  • What are emotional koans and how do we work with them.

  • How does the practice of council support our community growth?

  • What are the essential practices of Cosmopolitan Zen?

This session will be an open discussion led by Ekai Joel Kreisberg. Bring your questions and you listening skills.

This session is open to newcomers as well as those who want a refresher. No prior experience is needed. Offered four times a year, this session is part of the Cosmopolitan Zen Basics program that introduces a variety of themes commonly explored at Shining Bright Lotus..

Cosmopolitan Zen Basics is open to anyone.
